European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
