Mystery Rosy Sludge on Remote Tasmanian Shoreline Prompts Concerns of Possible Algal Bloom

Agencies in the island state are striving to determine a pink slime that has materialized on a remote shoreline, with certain experts anxious it could be an algae outbreak.

Extensive Appearance Along Shore

The pink-tinged sludge was found on a portion of a southern bay about 37 miles south of Hobart. A comparable ooze has also been documented on parts of Little Roaring Beach and a separate bay.

Samples Collected for Testing

Specimens have been collected and sent to the Environment Protection Authority for examination. A representative stated that "algae outbreaks are a natural event in reaction to shifts in minerals, warmth, rain or light".

"They are sometimes called reddish tides because the blooms can change the water reddish," the official noted. "Only some algal blooms are harmful, with several kinds serving as a key source of nourishment for creatures in the marine food web."

"The primary reason of crimson tides in Tasmanian waters is the sea plant Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce bioluminescent light displays at night."

Algal blooms occur naturally but their frequency has increased in the past few years, partially due to environmental shifts and contamination that join together to create nutrient-rich waters ideal for the quick expansion of dinoflagellates.

"There are numerous of these outbreaks around Tasmania of late," she remarked.

The scientist said sea sparkle did not generate toxins comparable to the organism involved in South Australia's harmful event, but it does consume microscopic animals and "lots of fish eggs", meaning marine life were particularly vulnerable.

"It's common to observe a proliferation of this algae after a outbreak of another organism, or something like a salmon or coral spawning event," she added.

Calls for Response and Safety Concerns

A campaigner, who collected samples of the pink sludge in Tasmania, said it looked like the suspected bloom had "increased notably" and indicated the fish farming business was the primary suspect, pointing to comparable events in other places.

"Thus Tasmania needs to issue a strong warning here, the officials and the regulators need to respond to this. We need to study the specimens we've taken and we need to inform the public here," she said.
