Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs should be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch activating and you become starving," said a patient.

This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
