An extensive two-month cruise through the Land Down Under was terminated in the wake of the death of an elderly lady who was stranded by the ship on a remote island.

The passenger had been walking on the remote island with shipmates from the cruise ship, but broke off from the party for a pause. The ship sailed away leaving her and returned several hours later after the crew realised the passenger was missing.

An extensive hunt located her body the subsequent day.

Officials are looking into the incident, in coordination with law enforcement and the medical examiner.

The CEO of the shipping company said that travelers and staff on the ship were notified that the remainder of the cruise had been terminated due to the "tragic passing and earlier mechanical issues".

Via official communication, he mentioned that passengers would be provided a full refund, and said the organization was working "to arrange the travel back of the travelers via private aircraft".

Regulatory bodies also published an revised announcement, and said they had "provided a order to the Commander" preventing any additional guests from getting on the ship.

The representative said that they would inspect the ship in Cairns upon its return.
